What You Need to Know About Ducted Heating and Cooling Systems?

Whether you are taking care of a residential building or a commercial establishment, choosing the right air conditioning system is one of the major considerations to deal with. Whether you are building a new home or renovating one, you will need to make a choice between a ducted air conditioning system and a ductless one. Without proper knowledge, this can become quite a daunting decision to make. Both ductless and ducted air conditioners are available in multiple brands, and you need to go through their details before you make your final choice. Here you can find some information about ducted heating and cooling systems and you can choose the best one after checking the following details.

Ducted Heating and Cooling Systems

What a Ducted AC System is?

As its name suggests, a ducted system provides heating and cooling effects through a network of ducts spread out across the building or rooms. It has a central unit that consists of a compressor, an air handling unit, and a condenser. It is often located in the garage, attic, or basement of the house. You need to install the ducts on your roof or ceiling and connect them with the central unit. You can also control the temperature of your different rooms by remote control system.

Types of Ducted Heating and Cooling Systems

Also known as central AC systems, ducted heating and cooling systems can be categorised into two main types:

  • Packaged Central AC System: In a packaged system, all the AC components, including the compressor evaporator and condenser are situated in a single unit. You can either place it outside on the roof or near a wall. It is most suitable for commercial buildings or pre-built houses where limited spaces are available. Then, large ducts are used to circulate the conditioned air into the rooms from the air handling unit. Heating facilities can also be offered with this system by coupling it with furnaces or heating coils. Else, you can install a reverse cycle air conditioner, which can keep your rooms cool in summer and provide warmness in winter.

If you are planning to install packaged ducted heating and cooling system in your building, check your outside space well in advance. Since it is going to be a heavy system if you are planning to keep it on your roof, make sure that it is strong enough to handle the load adequately. Even if you are planning to place it on the ground, you may need to dig a concrete floor before installing the system.
  • Split Central AC System: These are quite common central AC systems currently in use. These ducted heating and cooling systems consist of the compressor and the condenser in a package placed outside, and a separate evaporator placed indoors, usually installed in an attic or a closet. When the outdoor unit gives refrigerant to the evaporator in the outdoor unit, the air is cooled down and it is pumped through a network of ducts from the air handling unit. As the name suggests, this system is separated into two parts, the compressor or the condenser, and the evaporator. The reason why they are installed separately is their big size and heavyweight. As compared to a packaged AC system, a split AC system is 3 times bigger in size, but many times more efficient.

The best thing about ducted heating and cooling system is that they are highly efficient in cooling and heating the interiors without any unsightly ducts running all around. They offer air conditioning advantages in a much faster and efficient way than others. With regular service and maintenance, you can keep your system running efficiently for long.
