How many people come to Rio for the New Year?

According to a study released by Riotur (Tourism Company of the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro), 2.4 million people were at Copacabana Beach in New Year’s Eve in 2018 only.
This number is almost the same as the estimated population of Belo Horizonte, the capital and biggest city of Minas Gerais, in 2019, that has about 2.5 million people, as shown by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
The success was even greater on New Year’s Eve 2019, when Rio de Janeiro City Hall counted an audience of 2.8 million people, almost the same as the estimated population of Salvador in 2019, with 2.872 million people, also according to IBGE.
For comparison purposes, the entire area of Copacabana is 4.10 km². In a hypothetical situation, if the neighborhood were a country, at the time of New Year’s Eve festivities, its population would be 585,365 inhab./km² (inhabitants per square kilometer) in 2018 and 682,926 inhab./km² in 2019.
The city with the largest population density in the world in Manila, the capital of The Philippines, with 41.515 in hab/km². Copacabana, the “country”, would have a density of 1410% larger in 2018 and 1645% in 2019. This is a lot!
The information that New Year’s Eve in Rio attracts many tourists can be confirmed by a Riotur estimate, which shows that 56% of the people who were there in 2019 were tourists, that is, 1.568 million tourists.
How does the city prepare for New Year’s Eve?

On New Year’s Eve 2019, for example, hundreds of cameras were scattered throughout the southern zone of the city, as well as thousands of agents were allowed to use stun guns to contain possible problems.

On New Year’s Eve, the situation reached its absolute levels. A survey by the Brazilian Hotel Industry Association of Rio de Janeiro (ABIH-RJ) and SindHotels Rio, says that the average occupancy rate in the entire city was 98%, with the neighborhoods of Flamengo and Botafogo reaching a total occupancy of 100%!
The ABIH-RJ also concluded in a survey that, among tourists, 79% were brazilian and 21% were foreign, mainly from countries like Argentina, United States and Chile.

Copacabana

Only at Copacabana Beach, in 2019, 1.941 agents were present, that is, 12.2% of the staff working in the state. This proves how safety was a very important element.
There isn’t a defined number for the security staff on New Year’s Eve 2020 yet, but a large team is expected, as the event attracts millions of people from around the world, and has in safety one of its main purposes.
