What Are The Benefits of Brushless Motors for Drones

What is the Brushless Motor?
A brushless motor is as same as a brushed motor the only difference is that it takes a different approach to generate a changing magnetic field. Unlike in brushed motor instead of the central rotor, the rotor of a brushless Custom Motor actually surrounds the rotor. In a brushless motor, the rotor has a permanent set of magnets which reacts to the changing magnetic fields of the stator. Benefits of Brushless Motors.

Benefits of Brushless Motors:
Following are the advantages of the brushless motor
Less maintenance:
Brushed motor are worn out more easily as compared to the brushless motor. They often require dismantling and parts replacement. As the brushes of the commutator are constantly in contact with the terminals of the power source even as the commutator rotates rapidly. But when the brushes become torn out and are no longer able to maintain a contact, the brushed motor becomes useless.
But in case of the brushless there is no contact between the rotor and the stator of the brushless motor so the risk of wear and tear are greatly reduced. For more you can visit here.
More efficient:
As the brushes of the brushed motor are constantly in contact so most of the energy is lost in the form of heat produced due to friction. This causes the efficiency of the brushed motor to be around 75 to 80 percent.
On the other hand the brushless motor are more efficient because no energy is lost as heat. There is still some energy loss due to air friction but even that is to the minimal causing its efficiency to be around 90 percent. Even this efficiency can be increased by using stronger magnets, heat resistant oils and improved ESC algorithms. Benefits of Brushless Motors.
Longer lifespan:
The brushless motors have a longer lifespan than brushed motors because in brushed motors the brushes are constantly in contact which causes the heat to build up. Even when using toys with brushed motors it is recommended not to use it for more than a couple of minutes without giving it the opportunity to cool down because it can damage the integrity of the toy
While in the case of drones you have to use the motor for more than a couple of minutes especially if you are considering aerial photography. As compared to the brushed motors the brushless ones can operate somewhere along 30-60 minutes. Also the brushless motor have been shown to last several year with minimal maintenance. High torque at low speed:
Another advantage of the brushless motor is that it is capable of producing high torque at low speed making them suitable for drones. These motors can achieve variable speed depending on the operator.
Less noise:
Most of the noise that is generated by the brushed motors is due to the friction between the brushes and the terminals of the power supply. Even though lubricants can be used to reduce the noise but still it is unavoidable.
Conclusion
While the brushless motor only produces the whirring sound it is still an improvement as compared to the screeching sound, also the improved ESC algorithms and design are causing the brushes to move more smoothly and eliminating the rapid “stop and go” motion of the elder technology.
