Things to Consider While Decorating for Halloween
Index Of The Blog
Halloween is right around the corner, and you probably are already planning what kinds of Halloween decorations to put up. So, would you go with something R-rated like blood, gore, and supernatural beings? Or would it be something G-rated, like cartoonish ghosts, Frankenstein monster, mummies, and plenty of pumpkin faces? Whichever it may be, setting up Halloween decorations is a hard-work, so you need the right creative guide to make sure everything is perfect.
Outside Decorations
Before you start putting up cobwebs and bats outside your house, you need to make sure the weather will not ruin them. Luckily, November is spring in Australia, but you still have to be ready, in case it rains. Consider how much you are willing to commit to outdoor decorations. The more you put up, the more you will have to take down when the rain clouds start gathering. Alternatively, if you have a covered porch, you can limit all your outside Halloween decorations in this area.
Besides the rain, consider the wind too. If you are to hang pumpkins and ghosts, bear in mind that strong winds can blow them away. So besides waterproofing your decorations, make sure that they are sturdy too.
Indoor Decorations
You have more freedom with indoor decorations. These are great if you have guests coming over for Halloween. If you have a fireplace, it is excellent for letting your creativity go wild. You can put bats coming out of the fireplace or a witch’s cauldron. Also, putting beakers, test tubes, and other chemistry glassware works in making your fireplace look like a mad scientist’s laboratory. If you want it to be elaborate, you can use dry ice in coloured water, to make it look like something is bubbling. Mirrors are also great for decorations.
If you want creepy mirror decorations, you can put images of spirits trapped in another dimension. But if you are going to keep things kid-friendly, just cobwebs or the Magic Mirror from Snow White are great. Do not neglect horizontal surfaces like tables and shelves. As the old saying goes, “The smallest details make the biggest differences.” You know those little nooks and crannies in between books, knickknacks, and wine bottles, they are great for placing small critters like spiders, cockroaches, and centipedes (all fake, of course). You can also put tiny pumpkins and skulls. While you are at the shelves, you might as well put some themed covers on your books like “Spells and Potions” or “Dark Magic”. Just like that, you can also put Halloween-themed labels on wine bottles. Slap on some crazy labels like “Snake Extract” or “Dragon’s Bile”!
Do’s and Don’ts
As much as you want to be creative with your Halloween decorations, there are some boundaries that you should not cross. Some themes are too sensitive and may hit people differently. For example, hanging up bats, ghosts, and skeletons is fine, but you should not go hang up a fake body by the neck. Avoid traumatizing displays, like mutilated corpses or a murder scene. That second one might even prompt someone to call the cops. Offensive displays like graphic violence, racism, and sexism are also a big NO.
Holidays allow you to let out your creative side, and Halloween decorations are great media to blend scare and cuteness. Keeping things fun is important, but be sensitive to others’ feelings too.
