Samsung A02s Review: A Low-Cost Phone You Won’t Hate

Every smartphone manufacturer needs a starting point for their lineup, and Samsung’s is the Galaxy A02s. At 399 DT to 479 DT, it’s a true budget smartphone, but what do you get for your money? Is the minimal spec sheet up to the task? In our Samsung Galaxy A02s review, we’ll break it down and uncover the value.

The Galaxy A02s was released in early 2021 as the Galaxy A series’ entry-level variant. Samsung offers its budget smartphone in a whopping six different configurations, starting with 1GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. The Galaxy A02s is available in red, black, blue, or white, depending on the version you choose.

The Samsung Galaxy A02s comes preloaded with Android 10 and One UI 2.5, although it has subsequently been updated to Android 11.

Samsung Galaxy A02s: Everything you need to know

The Snapdragon 450 SoC from Qualcomm keeps the lights on and is at the heart of Samsung’s low-cost operations. You can get it with up to 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, or you can add a microSD card for additional capacity. The Galaxy A02s has the same 5,000mAh battery and 6.5-inch HD+ display as the Galaxy A12, which should look excellent and last for hours. It also retains the Infinity-V notch; however, the selfie lens is only 5MP instead of 8MP.

The packaging isn’t particularly impressive; Samsung includes a charging cable and USB-C cable, as well as a SIM ejector tool. Otherwise, you’ll just find paperwork, though the startup guide covers both the Galaxy A02s and Galaxy A12.

Design and Display

The absence of a glossy surface was one of Samsung’s better design choices for the Galaxy A02s. Shine appears to be a common choice among budget-friendly devices, but Samsung’s gently textured matte finish is widely liked. It isn’t entirely impervious to fingerprints or smudges, but it won’t drive you insane trying to keep it clean. The patterned back panel also gives a stylish touch to the basic black finish.

The huge, 6.5-inch HD+ display from Samsung is excellent, especially for the 399 DT price. It is big enough to stream your favorite shows, and the lesser resolution won’t bother you much. You can use the single down-firing speaker to crank up the volume, or you can use the convenient headphone jack located along the bottom border.

Camera

The primary 13MP camera can perform excellent lighting, but the triple rear camera isn’t one of Samsung’s greatest. It also works in conjunction with the macro and depth sensors to provide wide/ultra-wide support without the need for a separate lens. Given the restrictive hardware, you’ll be delighted by Samsung’s Live Focus option, especially on the selfie camera.

Hardware

Despite the hardware restrictions, One UI 3.1 helps to keep the Galaxy A02s feeling snappy and up to date. It’s refreshing to see a low-cost phone get Samsung’s promised updates. Samsung Free, for example, is a single app that combines Samsung TV Plus, Samsung Podcasts, Taboola News, and Instant Plays.

Battery

With the Galaxy A02s, you’ll receive exceptional battery life, with the 5,000mAh battery lasting two days of moderate use. It may not be up to intensive gaming, but you can use it to answer emails and browse social media for hours on end.

Processor

In the Galaxy A02s, Samsung didn’t allow much room for a good processor, and it shows. Even simple actions like accessing the Settings menu caused the Snapdragon 450 to slow. The limited 3GB of RAM in the version doesn’t improve matters all that much, and you should consider the version with 4GB of RAM instead.

Samsung A02s: Should you buy it?

If you only need the essentials and are on a low budget, the Galaxy A02s is an excellent choice. It’s the most cost-effective way to acquire Samsung’s One UI 3.1, but the processor can’t always keep up, and the cameras aren’t ideal for many family photographs. The Galaxy A02s, on the other hand, can oblige if you want a cheap way to watch your favorite shows and use your wired headphones.

If money is limited and you won’t be annoyed by poor performance or the lack of a fingerprint sensor, this phone will keep you connected and protected for the next four years – few phones can make that claim.
