Telugu Language and its History
The importance of Telugu cannot be undermined when it comes to India’s national languages. Telugu is a prominent Indian language popular in the southern parts of India. Telugu is known as the official language of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. It holds the recognition of being one of the 22 scheduled languages in the Republic of India. Most important of all, Telugu is the second most commonly spoken language in India after Hindi and is also the 15th most commonly spoken language worldwide. Origins of Telugu language
According to linguists, Telugu is classified as a Dravidian language and does not belong to the Indo-Aryan family of languages that includes Hindi, Sanskrit, Greek, and Latin. The four major languages in southern India i.e., Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam, belong to the Dravidian family of languages. On the other hand, presently, there are 21 different Dravidian languages in the Indian subcontinent, with some of them still being spoken in the remote areas of Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The history of the proto-Dravidian languages goes long back several millennia before Christ. The earliest recorded history of Telugu goes back to 6th century AD. Most important of all, Telugu has a refined literary record that goes back to the 11th century AD. The majority of Telugu written literature till the end of the nineteenth century is known for an extremely formal literary style. With the onset of the twentieth century, the colloquial spoken language found literary recognition.
Accepting Elements of other Languages
The Telugu language is known for accepting foreign words with considerable ease, especially evident in the strong influence of Sanskrit on Telugu literature. A major share of characters in the Telugu alphabet, such as different aspirated consonants, was created specifically for providing the benefit of writing and pronouncing Sanskrit words. In addition, words from Arabic, Persian, and Urdu language also made their way into the Telugu literature.

Years of British rule and the sweeping transformations all over the globe have led to linguistic, grammatical, and cultural associations between Telugu and English. Small differences such as the arrangement of the subject, object, and verb in sequential order in the Telugu language as compared to the subject-verb-object sequence in English grammar. However, these differences don’t impose any influence on the expressiveness of the Telugu language.
